Scientific Board

The scientific board advises the general board of the Tick-borne diseases Foundation Netherlands about scientific topics related to the general goals of the TBD Foundation. Advice is given independently or on request from the general board and includes relevant perspectives on a topic. Members are from diverse professional backgrounds and have affinity or experience with tick borne diseases and their impact. The scientific board develops, for example, the research strategy, research calls and guides patient representatives in several research projects. Members (alphabetical):

Leona Gilbert (PhD) founded a university spinoff company to develop complex diseases testing, among which Lyme Disease. Docent Cell and Molecular Biology. She has a doctorate in biotechnology and a long experience in bio-innovation and bio-business and has supervised numerous PhD, MSc and BSc students. She has a passion for new and exciting opportunities for collaborations, synergy and good science.

Charles Guest (MBBS) is a public health physician from Australia, now living in The Hague. His research includes a wide range of epidemiological and policy studies. He was Director of Public Health in the state of Victoria and remains an Honorary Professor at the University of Melbourne. He is learning Dutch, far too slowly.

Joop Klein Haneveld (MD) – General Practitioner with a passion to improve the range of treatments available for chronic Lyme patients. He has more than 20 years of experience as general practitioner trainer at the general practice program at the University of Utrecht. Participates as a patient representative in several prospect studies related to the long-term consequences of Lyme Disease.

Dominic D. Smith (Dipl. Hort) Horticulturist and Landscape Designer, licensed in Crop and Pest management. He has a wide interest in, and an extensive knowledge of, tick-borne diseases (TBDs) and is part as a member, patient representative or ambassador of seven institutions related to TBDs. Enjoys being an entrepreneur and setting up new initiatives and is active in local politics.

Diana E. Uitdenbogerd Drenth (PhD) has a background in Household and Consumer studies and translating perspectives of households & patients to research proposals and policy strategies. Participates in TBD research as a researcher. Also guides patient representatives. She is compassioned about improving the situation for Lyme Disease and other TBD patients through evidence and research.

Research

Our focus points are

  1. Borrelia’s capacity for immune dysregulation,
  2. to develop specific tools to assess the health situation of Lyme patients, and
  3. to initiate the next steps in tick-borne diseases research.
